Wrestling camp to start from September 1; Bajrang, Narsingh, Vinesh to join | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Continuing with its efforts to gradually open the sports centres for the country’s athletes in a protected environment despite the cases of campers and support staff returning Covid-19 positive at its facilities, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Saturday announced the commencement of the wrestling national camp for the elite men’s and women’s wrestlers in Sonepat and Lucknow, respectively, from September 1 to 30.
The camp will be both for those who have already qualified for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics and for the core probables hopeful of making the cut at the Olympic qualifiers next year.
Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat have so far qualified for Tokyo. Bajrang, who is currently training at the JSW’s Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) facility in Vijayanagar near Bengaluru will join the camp in Sonepat, TOI has learnt.
Other men and women grapplers are also eagerly looking forward to join the camp. However, the women wrestlers were interested in shifting their camp base from Lucknow to Sonepat and even had written to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in this regard. Their worry was that the SAI Lucknow centre is situated near the Haj House in the city, which has been turned into a Covid care facility to treat the coronavirus patients by the state government.
“This decision to commence the camp has been taken to ensure that those athletes who have already qualified for the Olympics and those who can still qualify for the Olympics, can begin on-field training,” the SAI informed.
A total of 26 wrestlers in eight weight categories – 5 in freestyle (57, 65, 74, 86, 125kgs) and 3 in Greco-Roman (60, 77, 87kgs), as well as six support staff will participate in the men’s wrestling camp in Sonepat, while a total of 15 wrestlers in five categories (50, 53, 57, 62, 68kgs) and four support staff will participate in the women’s camp in Lucknow. Wrestlers who will be part of camps include Ravi, Bajrang, Narsingh Yadav, Deepak, Sumit, Gyanender, Sajan, Sunil Kumar, Nirmala Devi, Vinesh, Pooja Dhanda, Sakshi Malik and Divya Kakran.
The athletes, coaches and support staff joining the Sonepat and Lucknow centres will be given SAI’s mandatory Covid test upon arrival at the camp and resume training after a 14-day quarantine. The covid 19 guidelines of the Government of India, state government and the SAI SOP will be adhered to strictly.
There are 18 Olympic categories, and wrestlers still have the opportunity to win more quota places at the Asian qualifiers and World Qualifiers next year.
