MUMBAI: Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar and veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Tuesday slammed the national selectors’ decision to ignore the in-form Suryakumar Yadav for the Australia tour.
Vengsarkar, in fact, went on to say that “BCCI president and former India captain Sourav Ganguly should question the motive behind dropping Surya.”
Yadav was in fine form in domestic cricket last season, and has been in good touch for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020. He has played all the 11 matches for MI this season, scoring 283 runs at an average of 31.44 and a strike-rate of 148.94. He has hit two half-centuries, with 79 not out being his highest score. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy last year, he cracked 226 runs in eight games at an incredible average of 113.00. In Syed Mushtaq Ali T20, he slammed 392 runs in 11 games@56.00, including four fifties. In the Deodhar Trophy, he blasted an unbeaten 72 off just 29 balls for India C against India A.

Headed by former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi, the national selection committee on Monday picked the Test, ODI and T20I squads for the tour of Australia. “I’m astounded at the omission of ‘Surya,’ who is currently one of the most talented batsmen in the country, from the teams selected for the Australian tour. As far as sheer potential is concerned, I can compare Surya with the best in the Indian team. He has scored runs consistently. I don’t know what else he has to do to merit a place in the Indian team,” Vengsarkar told TOI.
“A batsman is at his peak from the age of 26 to 34. and I feel Surya (30) is at the peak of his career. If form and fitness is not the criteria, then what is it? Can anybody explain?,” wondered the former India chief selector. “With Rohit (Sharma) out of the team due to (a hamstring) injury, Surya should have been there to strengthen the middle order. BCCI president Ganguly should question the motive behind dropping Surya,” he lamented.

Harbhajan too took to Twitter to express his displeasure over the Mumbaikar’s exclusion. “Don’t know what else @ surya_14kumar needs to do get picked.. he has been performing every ipl and Ranji season..different people different rules I guess ,”he tweeted.
